One more 90 degree day...
Well, although I'm loathe to say it, the summer is wrapping up. School has started again at NNU, and my friends are scattering to their various homes and jobs around the globe. I have been completely ignoring the amused looks and pointed comments of NNU people who think that graduated students should be moving on, and am instead visiting the green chair in the English department as often as I can get away with it.
I am also beginning to make plans about my apartment, which, if there are no further snags with the obnoxious real estate people, I will "take possession of" in a couple days and actually live in in a few weeks. It's going to be basically a hodgepodge of whatever odds and ends of furniture and decorations I can scrape together for the first few months at least, maybe more. But I have great plans for the future. Even though this apartment isn't perfect, I hope it works out, because I'm plenty sick of moving, and I'd like to stay in one place for awhile and get a little bit settled, even if I am just in grad school.
I'll admit that right now the only think that I am excited about in the fall is moving into my own apartment (though I'm sure that will change once I get there). I'm going to have lots of plants and a refridgerator full of food that's only mine and a bedroom and bathroom to myself for the first time ever and, who knows, maybe a cat. The sky is the limit.
Oh, and as sort of a postscript regarding the last post, I've been wanting to add that perhaps Neville isn't a pureblood after all. I don't remember. I was just assuming that was the case because he lives with his grandmother. And if he's not, then he's my best guess for the half-blood prince. 0 comments

A Mixed Blessing...
The big news of the day is this: the new Harry Potter book will be called Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Now, this new title seemed a bit cheesy to me at first, but it has been growing one me, since it obviously raises the question, who is the half-blood prince? According to JK Rowling, it is not Harry nor Voldemort. I am tempted to get online and begin reading all the blogs of people who are even more obsessed with HP than me (and much smarter than me) and who have long, complicated, and probably correct theories about how the series will end, but I am refraining, mostly because I want to figure it out myself.
So, you see why this news is a mixed blessing. While the sixth book remained nameless, we could all just pretend that it would be years and years before it would come out (which it may still be) and blissfully forget about it until then. But now there is a name... and a new mystery. And those of us who love literary and fantastical twists of plot must go back and painstakingly reread all five previous books looking for clues as to who exactly the half-blood prince might be.
What do you guys think? Those of you who read Harry Potter need to comment on this post and share your predictions with me. Could it be Neville? (Except he's pureblood--I think she's established that. But I feel that he has an important role to play, sharing so many similarities with Harry as he does.) Ron is pureblood, as is Malfoy.... Personally, I'm stumped. Another thing that's been bothering me is that mirror that Sirius gave to Harry. I feel like it's going to show up again; she wouldn't have put it in there just for Harry to forget about. I also feel unexplainably that Ginny is important in the future plot as well, although I have no idea how... and then there's the prophecy...
All I can say is that JK Rowling better be taking awfully good care of her health. I think the world might actually stop if she was unable for some reason to finish the series.

"Sleep has no place it can call its own." --Bram Stoker, Dracula
Mosquitoes are the bane of my existence. I get bit everywhere: indoors, outdoors, at dawn, dusk, noon, and midnight, on my toes, feet, legs, arms, shoulders, hands, ears, and face, with or without bugspray, garlic, or head-to-toe clothing; at all times and in all places, those revolting, blood-sucking, vampire bugs find me and eat me! I currently have about fifteen bites, and as each one heals, a new one always manages to take its place. The worst kind are the ones that are near a bone (such as the one currently on my left foot), because they turn into painful bruises that hurt especially when one tries to put on such things as shoes or rollerblades.
For those of you whose lives are blissfully free of such tortures, let me explain to you some of the other facts that I have learned, being myself the Hard Rock Cafe of Bugland.
--Most of the time, bug bites only itch when something touches them, be it a skirt, bed covers, hair, or a slight breeze; however, when one attempts to exercise, all the bites on one's body begin to itch of their own accord, and continue to do so heartily until the exercise has ceased for approximately one hour.
--Sleeping is especially difficult with bug bites, and they can in fact wake you from a sound sleep just by itching.
--Mosquitoes, while sufficient to cause much suffering, are not the only bugs able to bite people; in fact, in Nampa, on my very own walking route, there are some very persistent black biting flies, for whom ordinary bug spray is not a deterrent. Only large amounts of bug spray with at least 25% Deet will discourage them, and then only from landing, not from hovering in the general vicinity of the legs in large numbers.
--Bananas, apparently, are appealing to mosquitoes, according to one of my friends. (Unfortunately, after hearing this, I seem to have developed an irresistible craving for bananas.)
--Cutter Bug Spray, which claims to "Make You Invisible To Bugs," is not satisfactory for individuals like myself. I need a bug spray labeled: "Will Make Bugs See You From A Mile Away And Fly In The Other Direction!"
--It is common knowledge that mosquitoes live outdoors, near standing water, and that they come out at dawn and dusk. However, all of these rules can and will be broken when a particularly tasty person is nearby as I proved when I got bit on the shoulder while washing dishes (with running water) indoors, at noon!
--When one has been newly bitten, not only does the new bite begin to itch at once, but every other pore in the body begins itching in sympathy, with the expectation of also being bitten.
--Even in death, mosquitoes are revolting; smashing them in the act only smears blood and bug guts across your arms and legs, depriving you even of an otherwise rather comforting form of revenge.
I hope this post has been informative for everyone. In closing, I leave you with a few more quotes from Dracula, which I read last year in Tammy's class and which seems to be painfully appropriate:
"Despair has its own calms."
"The whole bed would have been drenched to a scarlet with the blood the girl must have lost..."
"No man knows till he has suffered from the night how sweet and dear to his heart and eye the morning can be."

Happy Day-After-My-Birthday To ME
Yes, yesterday was my birthday; and no, I did not manage to post directly on my birthday, mostly because I was busy doing things like having a flat tire on the freeway, buying new rear tires for my car, and being late for work. Needless to say, I'm all about celebrating the ten days after my birthday to make up for my crappy real birthday.
However, some highlights of the day were:
--phone calls from my family and friends from all over
--lunch out with Katie and Melody
--making $80 off of only six customers at the Mona
For the benefit of you Oregon people, I'm going to be coming home on August 8 until the 12th, so I will be accepting "Happy Birthdays" at that time. Phone messages are also acceptable.
