"Are all motorists as bold as you?"

I've had a number of driving issues today, so this title seemed appropriate. First, this morning I had to bring a load of plants to Woodburn for my dad, before Lynette and I could go play, but the "load of plants" was in reality a palate stacked at least twice as high as the cab of the pickup and very wobbly. Before leaving home, my dad's warnings were, "Be careful going around corners, and also when a truck passes you on the freeway, because of the wind." Not the most reassuring of statements. So I drove all the way to Woodburn going about 50 mph. And then, halfway there, a guy a few car lengths ahead of me, who was pulling a trailer, lost a wheel and started swerving around on the road, scattering gravel and sparks everywhere, chipping my windshield and paint, and causing me (I'll admit) to swear and hit the brakes (conscious of both the danger ahead and the possibility of the tower of plants to fall forward onto the cab.) All in all, a rather eventful drive all around.

Anyway, things got much better once Lynette and I reached Gonditterei in Salem. Nothing like a direct shot of pure chocolate into your bloodstream to make life a little better. Oh yeah, and stimulating conversation of course. Steph has convinced me that my life does not revolve around television enough. I need to go out and get an antennae for my TV so that I can keep up with all the great shows like 24, Alias, The West Wing, Gilmore Girls, and all the others, which make for such wonderful conversation. This, added to the fact that Tammy speaks almost entirely in movie quotes, suggests that my social life ultimately depends upon my watching more television.

"Why do people have to grow up, marry, change?"

Being back in Nampa for a week made me realize anew how wonderful my life was last summer. Good old Idaho. (Interesting to note that the more fun I'm having, the less I write on my blog. So sorry about that.) But we did have a grand old time. I stayed with Tammy and Mark (and Tosha, of course, who, incidentally, this time did not wake me up by taking a flying leap from the floor to the middle of my stomach, as she did the last time I spent the night at the Gismondi's).

We went caroling, saw Oceans 12 and Finding Neverland, cooked yummy food, put up Christmas lights, went to the Mona Lisa, Le Cafe, El Rodeo, OMC, and Cranberry Corner (where the above picture was taken), saw The Nutcracker, stayed up very late simply because we could, slept in, watched Mystery Science Theater and The Sixth Sense, made lots of Christmas goodies, talked, sang, laughed.... Good times were had by all. And in only one week.

And now I'm back in Oregon, which is strangely much colder than Nampa was. And my vacation is over, cuttings time has begun. I'm certain that two weeks in the cuttings room will do wonders for my desire to return to school and the academic lifestyle. Plus, it helps me remember that if I flunk out of graduate school, there will always be a place for me doing cuttings at VE Nursery Company.

The winds of persecution have blown over

Yesterday, I sat through three hours of the "mini-conference"--a fancy name for everyone in my class reading a ten (or sixteen, or eighteen) minute version of their papers to one another, while our professor looked on, crunching on Doritoes and throwing his pen at odd intervals. Seriously, sometimes I wonder if he isn't just a thirteen-year-old kid inside, like Tom Hanks in Big, and just managed to wander into our classroom on the first day of classes and decide to "teach." Certainly the preparation he's put in is comparable to what a thirteen-year-old would do. In any case, it's finally over, and almost the entire class went out afterwards to celebrate the end of his two and a half month reign of terror over our lives.

And now I'm done!!! All I have left to do is turn in the final draft of my paper (which I won't be looking at again for at least two days yet), and it only needs a bit of revision and proofreading. Its hard to believe that I'm nearly done with my first term of grad school. As awful as it's been I'm actually looking forward to next term a little bit. This may seem masochistic, but I'm taking classes that study real, honest to goodness literature, and I think it's going to be a much better experience. The classes that I'm signed up for are Sacred Violence and a class on the Baroque period, in which we're looking not only at lit, but music, art, philosophy and so on, which should be really fun. But in any case, I have four lovely weeks stretching out before me, in which I shall do nothing but read the books I like, create fun things with markers and glue, play with my friends, watch DVDs of Alias, and generally be as un-studious as possible. Oh yeah, and blog, of course.
