Randomish Things

Here is how my mornings have been going this summer:
8:30 Wake up
8:45 Make tea and breakfast (granola, fruit, yogurt, boiled egg)
9:00 Sit out on front porch in pajamas and read
10:00 Get up, stretch, water plants, go back to reading
11:00 Get up, check email, wander around the house, go back to reading

And so you have it... my payoff for nine months of 10- or 12-hour days. Glorious.

I went to see Get Smart the other night with my sisters. It was funny, but disappointing too because I was hoping to see more from Anne Hathaway than just "Oh, Steve Carell, you're so stupid and isn't it funny," and "Look at my butt." At the end when she finally kissed Steve, I actually covered my eyes--it was too ew. In no way was that coupling believable to me.

Now, for the two people who read my blog and also watch Battlestar Galactica, what did you think of the midseason finale? I loved it. Wow, it was the perfect mix of the feel-good, end-of-season wrapup and the surprise left-hook of a cliff-hanger. Things I loved: the Adama/Roslin reunion, the fact that we still don't know who the final Cylon is, Lee taking charge after Adama's breakdown, Starbuck's face when she finds out Anders is a Cylon, Tigh being all heroic and self-sacrificing, and the humans and Cylons finally being able to work together. And now I guess we'll see if I can muster up all those good feelings again in a year when the season resumes.

You should see my beautiful back yard. I've been planting and weeding and watering like crazy the past couple of weeks and it looks awesome! It's hard to believe that a year ago it was just a big patch of mud. The soil around here is very rocky, which means I have a whole mass of big river rocks to use as borders, and my brother brought over some bark for all the flower beds. I put together some planters for the patio area and picked up some shrubs from the nursery for the empty spots by the fence and the mound in the back. I'll take some pictures one of these days.

I've been working on stuff for school that I never get around to during the year. The most exciting thing (in my opinion) is a database I'm creating on Access that will hold entries of all the poems I use during the year, with information on their form, topics, era, length, accessibility, and more. So, when I want a contemporary poem about pets that's less than a page, or a Victorian poem about love and death, or a lyric poem that features an extended metaphor, I'll be able to find it easily. How cool is that? It's very time-intensive at the beginning, of course, to enter them all, but I'll be able to use it forever. I've got about 400 entered right now, but that's just a start. I might looking into putting it online, too, eventually. We'll see.

Strawberry season is almost over. I went yesterday and picked for the second time, but when I got home, I realized that a lot of what I had picked was actually overripe. Oh well. They still work for smoothies and such. I absolutely love picking strawberries. Even though it's hot, tiring, bending-over-type work, the strawberry fields are so lovely and smell so heavenly that I always stay and pick more than I need.

It's funny, whenever I get the chance to do something like pick strawberries for myself, I think that this is where I belong--living in the country, spending lots of time outdoors, with space to garden, driving down long country roads. But, I guarantee, when I go to Portland this weekend, I'll be walking up and down the aisles of Powell's, thinking that the operas and libraries and restaurants and public transportation of the city are for me. I just can't decide...

Well, I'm off. My homemade vegetable soup and cheese scones are calling to me...

With all this extra time on my hands, I've been experimenting cooking some dishes that I've been wanting to try. My favorite way of cooking is to have a sort of general idea of what I want and then make it up as I go along. And now, after ten years or so of learning how to cook, I'm pretty much at the place where I can make that work (with only an occasional blooper). Anyway, I thought I'd share with you my successes and failures this summer, starting with this week's attempts. You oh-so-experienced cooks out there, don't laugh.

First, I made an excellent sort of Greek pizza yesterday. Basically, it was just a piece of flatbread, spread with hummus and topped with sliced tomatoes, spinach, feta and a little mozzarella, baked for ten minutes or so at 350 and then broiled for a few minutes. I wasn't sure how the hummus would hold up in the oven, but it was super! The only think I would do differently is maybe to bake for a little longer at a lower temperature before turning on the broiler.

Second, I've been wanting to try making a chicken pot pie from scratch but I couldn't find a recipe anywhere. So, finally, today I just tried this:

1-2 cups of cooked, chopped-up chicken
1-2 cups of frozen mixed vegetables (basically enough chicken and veggies to fill the pie pan, but not heap up too much)
1 can of mushroom cream soup
Approx 1/3 cup of milk
A handful of grated mozzarella cheese

Mixed it together, put into a double pie crust, and baked it for 40 minutes or so at 425. Yum, yum. All I would do differently next time is to use less chicken and more veggies. I meant to put in some zucchini with the frozen veggies, but then I couldn't find any in my fridge when I looked. Sad. But some people might like more chicken, I guess. Oh, and I might look for a cream soup that has less salt. I found it just a titch too salty.

Why yes, I am dead, thank you for asking.

Actually, I've been buried in a wave of mini-vacations, the end of school, and severe sleep-deprivation related to all of the above. So, where to start, where to start...

Well, a couple weeks ago I met some of my Nampa friends down in SoCal for a little sun and fun. Emphasis on the sun. After weeks of cold Oregon dampness, it was so nice to see some sunshine, even if it wasn't yet very hot. We visited the San Diego zoo and saw the okapi (which I was very tickled with, since The Poisonwood Bible is one of my favorites). We drank some decadent hot chocolate at the Ghirardelli factory and rode the trolley cars in San Francisco. We did a LOT of driving and slept very little. We went wine tasting in Sonoma. We saw Sex in the City. We ate Moroccan food and drank tea in a Japanese tea garden. It was a whirlwind but very fun.

And since then, I've just been enjoying my lovely, lovely summer vacation. I pretty much slept through last weekend, and I'm still trying to catch up. But I've also gone back and cleaned out my classroom. I've rearranged my bedroom and turned our spare room into a kind of office/reading room. This week, I plan to pick strawberries, work in my garden, hang out with my friends, clean out my cupboards, sleep in the sun, and read, read, read.

Speaking of which, anybody else read Stephenie Meyer's The Host? I picked it up in the airport in LA (yes, for full price...), and read pretty much solid for the next 30 hours until I finished it. I tell you what, that girl can tell an engaging story. I'm not convinced that she's a particularly sophisticated writer*, and her martyring female characters still make me cringe, and her ending wraps up a bit too tidily, but I can't deny her power to make me forget even my bone-deep, month-long exhaustion and stay up for yet another late night to finish that bloody book. Kandice and I are going to her talk and book signing in Chicago in August, and I feel a bit like a literary Judas for going (and for being a little excited even). It's sort of like my secret penchant for those pink frosted Walmart sugar cookies. They're so soooo bad for you and they aren't even really worth the calories--the way baklava or chocolate cheesecake would be--and they make you feel kind-of queasy and regretful afterwards, and yet.

Miss Kitty Fantastico was gone when I got back from CA. Becky informs me that she basically takes off every time I leave town for more than a day or two. I'm not sure where she goes because I walked around the property and called her for two days after I got back, but she didn't return until the evening of the second day. She must have another family somewhere that feeds her. (Which makes me sort of sad and jealous. Aw.) But at least she's back safe. And she's been sticking extra close since then and biting more, which I interpret as her acting out her insecurities about my abandoning her. Lucky for her, I won't be taking any month-long trips this summer. I'm going to stick close and enjoy my own home and garden and bookshelf.

Also, I've been continuing to watch Battlestar Galactica. I seriously can't believe that I'm going to have to wait like nine months for the second half of the season. I think I'm going to have to go back and start from the beginning again. We'll see if the show holds up to a second viewing. Lois and Clark, I'm sad to say, didn't. I started rewatching some episodes from Season 1 and I was, on the whole, bored, the hotness of Dean Cain notwithstanding. Buffy, on the other hand, I could watch on a continuous loop forever. It never gets old. (And this conversation, some of you are thinking, was boring before it even started. Ok, fine, I'll spare you my fan-girl gushing. Go back to your real-world lives.)

*Not because she writes science fiction and fantasy, I'd like to make clear. As I have said before, I don't think of speculative fiction as being necessarily fluff. Just her books are fluff.
